Reducing window-bird collisions through a national program.
Every year, hundreds of millions of birds are killed from window collisions every year, according to the National Audubon Society. How many deaths occur on OSU campus alone?
OSU Bird Nerds is participating in the Lights Out program to collect data on bird collisions on campus. With enough data, we hope to bring this to OSU's attention and implement better bird collision preventative measures on multiple buildings.

But we need your help!
Curious about the National Lights out program?

We need volunteers to help us collect our data!
What? Volunteers will walk surveys along a campus route, searching for deceased or injured birds near buildings. Volunteers should be comfortable with collecting dead birds and dealing with live/injured ones (we will provide training on this!). When? Surveys will be done from 7:30-8:30 AM or 8:30-9:30 AM 1x a week, and 3x a week during May. Volunteers will need to commit to at least 1x a week. Surveys will start at the end of Winter term! Who? YOU! No prior experience/knowledge with birds is necessary. All we require is that you have a passion for birds and ready to learn! Volunteering is open to ALL- OSU students and non-students, Bird Nerds members and non-members, and community members are all welcome! Interested? Please email Jayshaun Talbert at [email protected] |
